Over The Rainbow
This gorgeous rainbow was glimpsed over Lake Pedder in south west Tasmania. The original lake was named after the first Chief Justice of Tasmania; Sit John Pedder. It was described as a beautiful glacial lake surrounded by a beach of sparkling pink quartz sand.
The lake came to international attention in the 1960s due to controversial flooding of the original lake and the creation of dams. One of the world’s first green parties, the United Tasmania Group, formed to protest the flooding of the lake. They are thought of as being instrumental to the creation of Australia’s current Greens Party.
Nowadays the lake is known as Australia’s largest freshwater lake and stands as a reminder of the island’s recent history.
